1 Thessalonians
Chapter 3
Overview
Paul and his companions had been separated from the new community of Jesus’ followers in Thessalonica, and they worried that hardship might weaken the group’s trust. Unable to bear the uncertainty, they sent Timothy from Athens to encourage them. This chapter follows the movement of that concern: Timothy’s welcome report brings enormous relief, Paul describes how deeply their faith strengthens him, and his worry turns into grateful prayer. The chapter ends by looking ahead, asking that their love keep growing and that they be ready when Jesus returns.
1So when we could no longer bear the uncertainty, we decided that we would remain alone in Athens.
2We sent Timothy, our brother and God’s coworker in spreading the good news about the Messiah. We sent him to strengthen and encourage you in your faith,
3so that none of you would be shaken by these troubles. You yourselves know that we are destined to face such things.
4In fact, when we were with you, we kept warning you that we were going to suffer. That is exactly what happened, as you know.
5So when I could no longer bear the uncertainty, I sent Timothy to learn how your faith was holding up. I was afraid that the tempter might have successfully tempted you and that all our work might have been for nothing.
6But Timothy has now returned to us from you. He brought us the welcome news of your faith and love. He told us that you always remember us warmly and long to see us, just as we long to see you.
7So, brothers and sisters, despite all our distress and suffering, your faith has encouraged us.
8Now we truly feel alive, as long as you stand firm in the Lord.
9How can we possibly thank God enough for you and for all the joy you give us in his presence?
10Night and day, we pray with all our hearts that we may see you face to face and help supply whatever is still lacking in your faith.
11May our God and Father himself, together with our Lord Jesus, clear the way for us to come to you.
12May the Lord make your love for one another and for everyone else grow and overflow, just as our love does for you.
13In this way, may he strengthen your hearts so that you are blameless and wholly devoted to God in the presence of our God and Father when our Lord Jesus comes with all his holy ones.
