Chapter 13
Overview
Paul is closing a tense letter to the Christian community in Corinth. He plans a third visit, while some people there are demanding proof that Jesus—the Messiah, God’s promised king—truly speaks through him. Paul answers firmly, yet his goal is repair rather than punishment. He asks them to examine their own lives, stop doing wrong, and become a united, peaceful community. The chapter moves from a serious warning to a hopeful farewell: authority is meant to build people up, not knock them down. Even a stormy relationship can clear into honest affection.
1This will be my third visit to you. Every accusation must be established by the testimony of two or three witnesses.
2On my second visit I warned those who had sinned before, along with everyone else. Now, while I am away, I warn you again in advance: when I return, I will not go easy on anyone.
3You are demanding proof that the Messiah is speaking through me. He is not weak in dealing with you; he is powerful among you.
4He was crucified in weakness, yet he lives by God’s power. We too share his weakness, but in our dealings with you, we will live with him by God’s power.
5Examine yourselves to see whether you are truly living by faith. Test yourselves. Do you not recognize that Jesus the Messiah is in you? If not, you have failed the test.
6But I hope you will recognize that we have not failed the test.
7We pray to God that you will do nothing wrong. Our concern is not that we should appear to have passed the test, but that you should do what is right—even if we appear to have failed.
8We cannot do anything against the truth, but only for the truth.
9We are glad when we are weak but you are strong. We also pray that you will be fully restored.
10That is why I am writing these things while I am away. Then, when I am with you, I will not have to act harshly by using the authority the Lord gave me. That authority is meant to build you up, not tear you down.
11Finally, brothers and sisters, rejoice. Put things right, be encouraged, be united in your thinking, and live in peace. Then the God of love and peace will be with you.
12Greet one another with a kiss that honors God. All God’s people send you their greetings.
13May the generous favor of the Lord Jesus the Messiah, the love of God, and the shared life created by the Holy Spirit be with all of you.
