Chapter 14

1Jesus said, “Do not let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God, and trust in me too.”

2Jesus continued, “My Father’s house has many places to stay. If that were not true, would I have told you that I am going to prepare a place for you?

3“And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and take you to be with me, so that you may be where I am.

4“You know the way to where I am going.”

5Thomas said to him, “Lord, we do not know where you are going. How can we know the way?”

6Jesus answered him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.

7“If you had known me, you would have known my Father too. From now on, you know him and have seen him.”

8Philip said to him, “Lord, show us the Father, and that will be enough for us.”

9Jesus replied, “I have been with all of you this long, and you still do not know me, Philip? Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’?

10“Don’t you believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me? The words I say to you do not come from me alone. The Father, who remains in me, is doing his own works.

11“Believe me that I am in the Father and the Father is in me. Otherwise, believe because of the works themselves.

12“I tell you with complete certainty: whoever trusts in me will also do the works I do, and will do even greater works than these, because I am going to the Father.

13“Whatever you ask in my name, relying on my authority, I will do, so that the Father may be honored through the Son.

14“If you ask me for anything in my name, I will do it.

15“If you love me, you will obey my commands.

16“I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper who will be with you forever.

17“He is the Spirit of truth. The world cannot receive him because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him because he remains with you and will be in you.

18“I will not leave you like orphans. I am coming to you.

19“Soon the world will no longer see me, but you will see me. Because I live, you too will live.

20“On that day you will know that I am in my Father, you are in me, and I am in you.

21“The person who accepts my commands and obeys them is the one who loves me. Whoever loves me will be loved by my Father. I too will love that person and show myself clearly to them.”

22Judas—not Judas Iscariot—said to him, “Lord, what has happened that you are going to show yourself to us but not to the world?”

23Jesus answered him, “Anyone who loves me will obey my message. My Father will love that person, and we will come and make our home with them.

24“Anyone who does not love me does not obey my words. The message you are hearing is not mine alone; it comes from the Father who sent me.

25“I have told you these things while I am still staying with you.

26“But the Helper—the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name—will teach you everything and remind you of everything I told you.

27“I leave you peace; I give you my own peace. I do not give as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled, and do not give in to fear.

28“You heard me tell you, ‘I am going away, and I am coming back to you.’ If you loved me, you would be glad that I am going to the Father, because the Father is greater than I am.

29“I have told you now, before it happens, so that when it happens, you will trust me.

30“I will not speak with you much longer, because this world’s ruler is coming. He has no hold over me.

31“Yet I act exactly as the Father commanded me, so that the world may know that I love the Father. Get up. Let us leave here.”
