Chapter 17

1Jesus said to his disciples, “Things that lead people into sin are certain to come, but terrible consequences await the person through whom they come.

2It would be better for that person to have a millstone hung around their neck and be thrown into the sea than to cause one of these little ones to fall into sin.

3Watch yourselves. If another disciple does wrong, correct them. If they change their ways, forgive them.

4Even if that person wrongs you seven times in one day and returns to you seven times saying, ‘I am turning away from what I did,’ you must forgive them.”

5The apostles, Jesus’ appointed messengers, said to him, “Help us trust God more.”

6Jesus replied, “If your trust were as small as a mustard seed, you could say to this mulberry tree, ‘Pull yourself up by the roots and plant yourself in the sea,’ and it would obey you.

7Suppose one of you owns a slave who is plowing or tending sheep. When the slave comes in from the field, would you say, ‘Come at once and sit down to eat’?

8Would you not instead say, ‘Prepare my dinner, tie up your robe, and serve me while I eat and drink. Afterward, you may eat and drink’?

9Does the master thank the slave for doing what was commanded?

10In the same way, after you have done everything commanded of you, say, ‘We are slaves who deserve no special credit. We have only done our duty.’”

11On his way to Jerusalem, Jesus traveled through the border region between Samaria and Galilee.

12As he was entering a village, ten men with serious skin diseases met him. They stood at a distance

13and shouted, “Jesus, Master, have mercy on us!”

14When Jesus saw them, he said, “Go and let the priests examine you.” As they went, they became free of the disease.

15When one of them saw that he had been healed, he came back, loudly praising God.

16He fell facedown at Jesus’ feet and thanked him. This man was a Samaritan.

17Jesus responded, “Weren’t all ten made free of the disease? Where are the other nine?

18Was no one found to return and honor God except this foreigner?”

19Then Jesus told him, “Get up and go. Your trust has made you well.”

20The Pharisees asked Jesus when God would begin to rule as king. He answered, “God’s reign does not arrive with signs people can watch for.

21Nor will people say, ‘Look, it is here!’ or ‘There it is!’ You see, God’s reign is among you.”

22Then Jesus said to his disciples, “The time will come when you will long to see even one of the days of the Son of Man, but you will not see it.

23People will tell you, ‘Look, there he is!’ or ‘Look, here he is!’ Do not go out or chase after them.

24Just as lightning flashes and lights up the sky from one side to the other, so it will be with the Son of Man on his day.

25But first he must suffer many things and be rejected by the people of this generation.

26What happened in Noah’s time will also happen in the days of the Son of Man.

27People went on eating and drinking, and men and women were getting married, right up to the day Noah entered the large boat. Then the flood came and destroyed them all.

28It was the same in Lot’s time. People were eating and drinking, buying and selling, planting and building.

29But on the day Lot left Sodom, fire and burning sulfur rained from the sky and destroyed them all.

30It will be the same on the day when the Son of Man is revealed.

31On that day, anyone on the flat roof of a house, with belongings inside, must not go down to get them. Likewise, anyone in the field must not turn back.

32Remember Lot’s wife, who looked back and lost her life.

33Whoever tries to secure their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life will preserve it.

34I tell you, that night two people will be in one bed. One will be taken and the other left.

35Two women will be grinding grain together. One will be taken and the other left.”

37The disciples asked him, “Where will this happen, Lord?” Jesus replied, “Where there is a corpse, there the vultures will gather.”
