Chapter 5

Peter · Chapter 5 of 5 · 14 passages

So I appeal to the elders among you as a fellow elder, a witness to the sufferings of the Messiah—the promised Anointed King—and one who will also share in the splendor that is going to be revealed.

Care for God’s flock among you like shepherds. Watch over them, not because you are forced to, but willingly, as God desires. Do not serve because you are greedy for money, but because you are eager to help.

Do not use your authority to control the people entrusted to you. Instead, become examples for the flock.

Then, when the chief shepherd appears, you will receive a glorious crown that never fades.

In the same way, younger people, place yourselves under the guidance of the elders. All of you must clothe yourselves with humility toward one another, because God opposes proud people but shows favor to the humble.

Therefore, humble yourselves under God’s mighty hand, so that he may lift you up at the proper time.

Place all your worries in his hands, because he cares about you.

Keep a clear head and stay alert. Your enemy, the devil, prowls around like a roaring lion, looking for someone to devour.

Resist him, standing firm in your trust in God. Remember that your community of fellow believers throughout the world is going through the same kinds of suffering.

After you have suffered for a little while, God—the source of every gracious gift—will personally restore you, make you steady, strengthen you, and give you a firm foundation. He has called you through the Messiah to share his eternal splendor.

Power belongs to God forever and ever. May it be so.

I have written this short letter to you through Silvanus, whom I consider a faithful fellow believer. I have encouraged you and firmly declared that this is the true kindness God has shown you. Stand firm in it.

The community of believers in Babylon, chosen by God along with you, sends you greetings. So does my son Mark.

Greet one another with a kiss that expresses love. May peace be with all of you who belong to the Messiah.
