Chapter 36

1Let the deacon conduct himself in such a way that he appears with fear, modesty, and reverence. In fervor of spirit, let him have a perfect manner of life. Let him observe and watch those who enter the house of the sanctuary. Let him investigate who they are so that he may know whether they are lambs or wolves. After questioning them, let him bring in whoever is worthy, lest a spy enter, the liberty of the Church be searched out, and the sin be upon his own head.

2If anyone arrives late for the service of praise, whether the dawn praise is being said or the Offering is being offered, whoever that person may be, let him remain outside, and let the deacon not bring him in. For it is a symbol of the coming day of judgment, and the noise of his entrance must not distract those who are praying. When he comes and finds the door shut, let him not knock, because of what has already been said. But after the opening hymn of praise has ended, let the faithful man or woman enter.

3Let the deacon say, either over the offering or for the hymn of praise:

4Let us beseech that the Lord may write our supplication in the book of life, and that God, who exists forever, may remember us in his holy dwellings of light.

5For this brother who is late, let us beseech that the Lord may give him earnestness and diligence, turn away from him every bond of this world, and give him the will of affection, love, and hope.

6Likewise, for a sister or a deaconess, and for those who are late or remain outside, let him admonish all the people to beseech on their behalf. For when a deacon mentions and admonishes them, earnestness is strengthened, the bond of love is fulfilled, and the disdainful and slothful person is disciplined.
