Chapter 4

1So, while God’s promise of entering his rest is still open, let us be very careful that none of you is found to have fallen short of it.

2We have heard good news just as those people did. But the message they heard did them no good, because they did not join in faith with those who listened.

3We who believe are entering that rest. God said, “In my anger I swore, ‘They will never enter my rest.’” Yet God’s work had been finished since the creation of the world.

4For Scripture says somewhere about the seventh day, “On the seventh day, God rested from all his work.”

5And in the passage quoted earlier God says again, “They will never enter my rest.”

6So some people still have the opportunity to enter that rest. Those who first heard the good news did not enter because they refused to obey.

7God again sets a particular day, calling it “today.” After a long time, he said through David what was quoted earlier: “Today, if you hear God’s voice, do not harden your hearts.”

8If Joshua had given the people this rest, God would not have spoken later about another day.

9Therefore, a Sabbath rest still remains for God’s people.

10Anyone who enters God’s rest also rests from their own work, just as God rested from his.

11So let us make every effort to enter that rest, so that no one falls by following the same pattern of disobedience.

12God’s message is alive and active. It is sharper than any two-edged sword, penetrating far enough to divide soul from spirit and joints from marrow. It judges the thoughts and intentions of the heart.

13Nothing in all creation is hidden from God. Everything is naked and exposed before his eyes, and he is the one to whom we must answer.

14Therefore, since we have a great high priest who represents us before God—Jesus, the Son of God, who has passed through the heavens—let us hold firmly to what we openly declare about him.

15Our high priest can understand our weaknesses. He was tested in every way, just as we are, yet he did not sin.

16So let us approach God’s throne of generous kindness with confidence. There we can receive mercy and find kindness to help us when we need it.
