Chapter 34

1Let him accomplish in the Church the things that are right. Let his ministry be as follows.

2First, let him do only those things commanded by the bishop, as for proclamation. Let him be the counselor of all the clergy and the mystery of the Church. Let him minister to the sick and to strangers, help widows, be a father to orphans, and visit all the homes of those in need, lest anyone be in affliction, sickness, or misery.

3Let him visit the homes of the catechumens, strengthening those who doubt and teaching those who are unlearned. Let him clothe the men who have died, adorn them, and bury strangers. Let him guide those who leave their dwelling or go into captivity.

4Let him inform the Church concerning the help needed by those in distress. Let him not trouble the bishop, but only on the first day of the week let him report everything, so that the bishop may know.

5Let him be watchful at the hour of the assembly, going about in the church. Let him see that no proud person, buffoon, spy, or speaker of idle words is present. Let him rebuke such people in the sight and hearing of everyone, and let him expel the person he has condemned to receive punishment, so that the others may also fear.

6If the offender persuades him to permit him to partake, let him comfort him. But if the man persists in his transgression or disorderliness, let the deacon report him to the bishop. Let him be separated for seven days and then summoned, so that he may not be taken captive. But if, when he comes, he still continues and persists in his folly, let him be cut off until he truly repents, comes to himself, and begs to be received back.

7If he is in a city by the sea, let him go quickly about the places on the shore, lest anyone be lying dead in the sea. Let him clothe and bury him.

8Likewise, let him search the guest house, lest anyone staying there be sick, in need, or dead. Let him make it known to the Church, so that it may provide what is right for each person. Let him arrange for the paralyzed and infirm to be bathed properly, so that they may have relief from their pains. Through the Church, let him give each person what is right.

9In the Church, let twelve presbyters, seven deacons, fourteen subdeacons, and thirteen widows who sit in front be recognized.

10Among the deacons, let the one considered the most earnest and the best at governing be chosen to receive strangers. Let him always remain at the church guest house, clothed in white garments, with only a stole upon his shoulder.
